Walton se narodil ve Wilkes County v Georgii. Rok jeho narození není znám. Podle Waltonovy výpovědi se jeho první obětí stal kůň, kterého zabil v roce 1890. O 6 let později si na své konto připsal první lidskou oběť, když zavraždil a následně oloupil jakéhosi muže ve městě Blossburg. Místní policie ovšem žádný záznam o podobné vraždě nenalezla.
Podle Waltonových vlastních slov to jako černoch neměl na americkém jihu jednoduché. Jako svobodný se cítil pouze tehdy, když cestoval po východním pobřeží USA. Během těchto cest používal několik falešných jmen.
V roce 1902 se Walton dostal do města Joliet v Illinois, kde se seznámil s Edith Hannovou. Ještě v ten stejný rok se s ní oženil, manželství však vydrželo necelé 2 roky. Poté od něj Edith odešla a přestěhovala se ke své rodině v Chicagu. V srpnu 1904 poslal Walton své manželce dopis, ve kterém ji žádal, aby se k němu vrátila. Když jej Edith odmítla, Walton odcestoval do Chicaga, kde zaklepal na dveře domu na 81 South Peoria Street. Tam bydlela rodina jeho manželky. Když mu Edith přišla otevřít, Walton vytáhl revolver a střelil ji do hlavy. Ihned poté se dal na útěk. Edith Hannová byla okamžitě převezena do nemocnice, kde však o 3 dny později zemřela. Policie se k vyšetřování této vraždy stavěla velmi laxně a i když byla rodinou zavražděné opakovaně upozorňována, že vrahem je dozajista Walton, nijak se nesnažila po tomto muži pátrat.
Walton se mezitím přesunul do města Joliet, kde napadl muže, o kterém se domníval (a zřejmě oprávněně), že měl poměr s jeho manželkou. Tento muž se však dokázal ubránit a Walton se musel spasit útěkem.
Další zpráva o Waltonovi pochází z roku 1906, kdy společně s několika komplici okradl jakéhosi muže ve městě Youngstown v Ohiu. Ještě téhož roku se Walton přesunul do města Shippenville ve státě Pensylvánie, kde se spojil se skupinou místních pouličních zlodějů. V červenci se však dozvěděl, že ho chtějí jeho vlastní kumpáni okrást. Když pak jednoho z nich, muže jménem Marion Blue, potkal na ulici, bez dlouhého rozmýšlení vytáhl revolver a čtyřikrát na něj vystřelil. Muž byl na místě mrtev.
Waltonovy další kroky zamířily do města Steubenville v Ohiu. Zde se seznámil se ženou jménem Mamie Gillová, se kterou krátce nato začal žít. Pár se však velice často hádal a nebylo nijak neobvyklé, když téměř dvoumetrový Walton svou drobnou družku zbil do bezvědomí. 16. listopadu 1907 se šla dvojice projít za město. Během procházky mezi nimi došlo k další hádce, vyvolané Waltonovou chorobnou žárlivostí. Walton srazil ženu na zem, kde ji začal bít a kopat. Sám později vypověděl, že zřetelně slyšel, jak pod jeho kopanci praskají ženina žebra. Když se Walton přece jen uklidnil, uvědomil si, že Mamie nedýchá. Přehodil si tedy její tělo přes rameno a hodil jej do nedaleké řeky. Tělo nebohé Mamie se nikdy nepodařilo nalézt.
3. března 1908 spáchal Walton svou poslední vraždu. Došlo k ní v městečku Gypsy v Západní Virginii. Jeho obětí se stala Beulah Martinová, která udělal tu chybu, že odmítla být Waltonovi po vůli. K této vraždě však došlo přímo na ulici, navíc za bílého dne. Netrvalo proto dlouho a Walton se musel dát na útěk před rozzuřeným davem asi 400 místních obyvatel. Podařilo se mu sice utéct do nedalekých kopců, zde byl však davem zahnán do opuštěné stodoly. Následující 2 dny se mu dařilo odrážet útoky místních obyvatel, přičemž postřelil 3 lidi. Když mu však místní šerif pohrozil, že nechá celou stodolu vyhodit do vzduchu dynamitem, Walton se nakonec vzdal.
Samotný soudní proces byl velmi rychlý. Našlo se velké množství očitých svědků a sám Walton se k vraždě Beulah Martinové přiznal. Soud jej proto uznal vinným a odsoudil jej k trestu smrti oběšením. Těsně před svou popravou se ještě Walton doznal i k ostatním vraždám, které spáchal. Samotná poprava se konala 17. července 1908. Když Walton kráčel na popraviště, zřetelně se třásl a posledních několik metrů musel být podpírán dozorci. Těsně předtím, než bylo spuštěno propadlo, dokonce hrůzou omdlel. Značně si tím usnadnil odchod z tohoto světa.
